After constant requests, Phillip Rhodes has happily agreed to open his workroom for learning millinery.
Recognised for his unique teaching style, Phillip believes in emphasising quality of finish and artistic expression in his classes.
Phillip’s career has always been broadly based. He is one of the last traditionally workroom-trained milliners in Melbourne. He learned from William Beale of the Mr Individual label. Phillip later worked in London creating headwear for large West End productions and big budget films. Upon his return to Melbourne, Phillip has been head milliner for the Australian Ballet as well as working on stage shows, operas, film and television.
Phillip has a strong reputation as a creator of race wear ranges for the wholesale trade as well as for individual clients.
A self-professed technical modernist, Phillip believes that millinery traditions should inform and guide methods of modern hat making, but should never be allowed to stifle the development of contemporary sensibility.
